You’ve heard of Snakes on a Plane. Well yesterday we had snakes in a Kitchen Design Studio. Ok I exaggerate. It was one snake, a juvenile black snake (according to Trevor’s iphone Googling). I think he slithered in to tell me it’s high time I write a blog post so here I am with a topic that is especially near and dear to our hearts nowadays, saving money.

If you don’t have thousands of dollars to invest in a new kitchen, there are some small tricks that can make a big difference. Whether you just seek to make your tired dysfunctional kitchen great looking and user friendly, or you want to up the appeal for a potential buyer, these smaller upgrades fit the bill.

Consumer Reports’ latest tests offers the home owner a variety of low investment ideas to freshen up the kitchen. Here's my twist on what they had to say.

Paint!

“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.”- Henry Ward Beecher (Love the quote and was going to find a way to work it in here no matter what) SO, how about painting your nature in your kitchen? Paint is the most inexpesive low-risk investment you can undertake to make a dramatic difference. Most of us can even tackle the walls ourselves. You can be bold as there typically isn't a whole lot of wall exposed in a kitchen (except this one!). Don't forget to consider adjoining rooms and how colors will work together. I prefer a satin or even a semi-gloss finish that is easy to wipe clean in the kitchen. If you’re more ambitious and want to paint your cabinets, do it right. Remove the doors, drawers and hardware, clean all surfaces, sand or de-gloss, use a primer and take your time!

This person's nature is PINK!! Photo from housebeautiful.com

Make it work! (As Tim would say)

You know what I’m talking about. Are you tired of falling spice containers? Do you yearn for a convenient trash receptacle? If you’ve lived in your kitchen for a while you will probably have a few functional pet peeves. Many of them can be addressed without breaking the budget. There are all kinds of ways to store those unruly spices. Check out my previous post Spaces for Spices. If you have a 15” to 21” wide cabinet to spare you can install a pull out trash container. I’d say this is the number one accessory for a kitchen and every kitchen needs one! How about roll out trays? You can also purchase these and install them yourself if you’re handy.

A 50 quart pull out trash can you can install yourself from organizeit.com

Counter solution

One of the most visible elements in your kitchen is the counter top and a new one can make a world of difference. Unless you’re going with a laminate, and there are some really nice selections out there, you’re going to spend more than $1,000. If that’s the case make sure your cabinets are worthy. Check for damage, especially for water damage in and around the sink cabinet. If the integrity of your cabinetry is compromised you certainly don’t want to set a butt load of money on top! Did you know that once granite or quartz are installed no one will gurantee it can be removed without breakage?

Yes, it's a laminate counter top! Photo from trendir.com

Create a splash

The back splash is another visible element with a lot of impact. Here you can get even more creative than with the counter top because it’s purely decorative! Other than being cleaner- friendly it doesn’t have to do anything but look pretty. Tile, tin panels, or even wine bottle corks can make a unique statement on your back splash.

Floor it

Wood flooring is hot at the moment and that’s because it’s a great look and it goes with almost everything but here’s the best kept secret in kitchen flooring. Traffic Master Allure Ultra Resilient Flooring.

Talking hands of Marcello Becchi of Trend Group USA (You know, it's Italiano)

Marcello Becchi sports two full sleeve tats acquired in the South Pacific but more importantly he knows all about engineered stone and LEED certification. Let me “splain”, as Ricky Ricardo would say. I had the pleasure of hearing Marcello speak at Ceramic Matrix in Delray Beach at an NKBA Chapter event last week. Marcello, of the Trend Group USA is a scholar and lecturer within the building materials industry.

Recycled glass mosaic tile, a specialty of Trend.

Trend is a manufacturer of all types of mosaic tiles with an emphasis on being Green. One type of material they manufacture is referred to as engineered stone. What is that, you ask? It is any material, used mostly for counter tops, floors and walls comprised of an agglomerate of crushed up glass, granite or quartz with a resin to hold it all together. Marcello has a reverence for the original engineered stone, terrazzo (flashback to childhood home before floor was covered with green carpet). Terrazzo is simply a mixture of cement and glass, marble, granite etc.

The most common type of engineered stone that you would recognize today are quartz materials such as Silestone and Caesarstone. We all know how indestructible these surfaces are to work on but that is just one advantage. As we deplete the world’s natural resources we need to pay attention to methods and products that minimize the impact on our environment. Engineered stone does that and here’s how: Typically only three out of ten slabs of granite are useable, however, the other seven “imperfect” slabs can be used to create engineered stone! Making a “green” decision often seems to be a more costly option but “green” choices are typically longer lasting and more durable. As Marcello says, “whatever costs more in the beginning costs least in the end.”

Ceramic Matrix is a wonderland of tile, full of custom unique tile treasures composed of glass, porcelain, marble, ceramics and whatever else anyone has thought to embed in tile. If you don’t live in Delray, don’t worry. There are six Ceramic Matrix showrooms in Florida. (If you don't live in Florida you can go ahead and worry.)

Showroom Tile Diva, Susan Serino, solemnly promises they will work with your budget. “There are ways to incorporate the affordable with a touch of bling for impact. “It’s not about a focal point”, she says, it’s about everything working together as an incredible whole.” One thing you can do if you don’t want to leave a “hole” in your pocket, is save the exotic expensive tiles to use sparingly as accents. This is a great example of less equals more in your wallet!

Move your kitchen contents with ease and efficiency so you can enjoy moments like this

One subject we have not delved into at KFL is the dreaded MOVE. Yes, moving pretty much sucks. Even if you’re fortunate enough to be “movin’ on up”, the actual moving process is not fun. In particular, moving the contents of your kitchen can be a real “kitchen nightmare”. Jeremy, one of my readers from “down-under” just happens to work for a removalist in Sydney that specializes in just such an endeavor and has generously offered to share with us his professional expertise. It’s always an excellent idea to hire an expert if you can but here are some invaluable tips you can put to use if you are a DIY mover. Here’s Jeremy!

Your kitchen contains some of the most fragile and difficult to handle things. Whether it’s your new dinner set or a collection of rare glass bowls, you need to pay extra attention packing the contents of your kitchen when relocating to a new home. Items such as large serving platters as well as little forks and spoons all need to be wrapped with utter care, particularly if you are moving a great distance.

Before you begin to pack make a list of the things you really don’t want to carry to your new home. Improvise ideas for getting rid of them well ahead of moving. You could have a garage sale or donate to the needy. If an item has seen better days it could make more sense to get rid of it and then replace it after the move. If you are too busy to find the time for packing, a professional moving company can come to the rescue.

If you are doing it without a professional help, here are a few tips for packing the contents of your kitchen.

You laugh but some very efficient packing is involved here.

Make an inventory

Creating an inventory is the first step towards packing your kitchenware successfully, with minimal or no harm. Review everything in your cabinets and drawers, like utensils, containers and cutlery. Make a list of all the items you decide to carry to your new abode. Remember to consider the weight if it is a factor in your moving expenses, for example if you are moving overseas.

Packing kitchen devices

While packing electrical appliances such as coffee makers, juicers or blenders, it is better to pack them in their original cartons if you have them. Clean and dry these items thoroughly before packing as any spillage or residue left can make for an unpleasant surprise at the other end. Disassembling the appliances can make packing easier an help prevent breakage.

Packing food items

You can pack dried and canned foods if you are traveling a short distance but make sure to check their expiration dates, prior to packing. Avoid carrying sauces and liquids that may break open on the way to your new home and spoil rest of the things.

Packing dishes

There are special cartons available for packing fragile items such as dishes, glasses and other breakables. Bubble wrap these items carefully. The trick is to fill up all the empty space in your box with newspaper or any other filler to prevent breakage.

Label, label, label

Towards the end of the process it becomes tempting to throw it all in a box but you’ll save a lot of time and confusion on the other end it you pack like items together and always label the boxes with general content description and room location.

If you are moving overseas, look for a trustworthy removal company to help you. Different countries have varying guidelines you may be unaware of.
Today I'm going to open my mind to you so you can step inside the creative (or whatever you want to call what goes on in there) process, as it pertains to cabinet design. The thing about designing kitchens and baths is that it doesn't only require vision in the aesthetic sense but also in the functional sense. We have to be creative in terms of the space constraints while being very aware of function.

WHAT HAVE WE HERE?

This is a nursery equipped to serve the nanny. She's got an under the counter refrigerator to store bottles, baby food and <del></del>whatever she wishes for herself. In addition there is a small sink and a microwave. There is also storage and counter top work space (underneath all the debris). That's a lot of function packed into less that six lineal feet! The lucky owners of this oceanfront abode are away for the summer, as is the custom in Palm Beach.

MY ASSIGNMENT

I have been asked to replace this set up but to keep the same foot print and function. The cabinets are to be more in keeping for this traditionally styled beach house.

MY OBSERVATIONS

The backsplash (area between counter and upper cabinets) is really high, about 22". Not only does this mean less cabinet space but it's a bit of a stretch unless you're a very tall nanny. In addition, there is nothing tying the upper cabinets to the lower cabinets and since they do not go wall to wall it looks as if the uppers are just hanging out, hovering over the base cabinets, not a great look. In general the layout is off kilter. The microwave requires a deeper cabinet and it sticks out unattractively on the left.

WHERE DO I START?

The appliances are old and will appear even older surrounded by new cabinets. Remember that if you are investing in a new kitchen it's penny wise and pound foolish to try to build your new cabinets around your older appliances. I will suggest that we replace the microwave with a small built-in model in stainless steel. For this I know I must use a minimum of 24" out of the 70" I have available. The refrigerator is important too. This one is old and it's an odd size, about 19". The new one will have to be 24" and I will reccommend that we build it in for a more custom look and to unify the small space. These types of built-in panel- accepting- under- the- counter refrigerators are either 15" wide or 24" wide. I certainly can't detract from the function by going smaller so I will give them more refrigerator space by going with 24" wide. Now that I know what I'm doing with the appliances I will work the cabinet layout around that.

Testing the waters...

Here's phase one showing the larger ref, a built-in micro and an attempt to even things up and connect the uppers to the bases but it's still not quite there yet. I usually draw a free-hand sketch to work out my initial thoughts. The final solution (I drew it using Chief Architect) is to use 42" upper side cabinets instead of the existing 30" uppers. Then since the microwave needs a deeper cabinet (15"), I moved it to the middle and raised it up to create some design interest and to take advantage of the tall ceiling. I made the side backsplashes 16" high with the center at 19". I centered the 24" upper microwave over a 21" wide sink cabinet which allows the bigger refrigerator on the right and does not lessen the size of the existing drawers on the left. I'll need a minimum of 3/4" panel to the right of the ref. That makes a total of 24 3/4" with ref and panel. I will duplicate that on the left making the 4 drawer cabinet 24 3/4" wide as well. This allows the upper side cabinets to be equal at 23 1/4" each. Last but not least, I am going to suggest using matching wood beadboard above the 4" backsplash to tie the uppers to the lowers and add a small crown moulding on the top to finish it off.

Here are the goods and why I picked them:

Kholer faucet K7342 in brushed nickel finish- It's a traditional faucet in a finish that will blend with the stainless steel of the microwave. The height makes it user friendly yet it will fit perfectly in the space.

If you have your hands full the handles are easy to turn on and off.

Kohler undermount entertainment sink K5848- I love the shape of this sink. I double checked the size and it fits in our 21" wide cabinet. It's a more updated undermount model but it's still cast iron. I'm specifying Biscuit to go with the cabinets but I will also suggest a stainless option which would also work.

SHARP R1214OVER THE COUNTER MICROWAVE- This model fits into our 24" wide space. It requires a 15" deep cabinet, check. It has a light below and I happen to know that Sharp makes a kick-ass microwave.

CABINETS BY HOLIDAY KITCHENS- flat panel with applied moulding. Finish, selected by designer, to be Snowdrift paint with Mink Wash. I chose Holiday cabinets because we have some custom size requirements and I can order Holiday in fractional increments. They also offer a wide array of finishes and door styles which is important in a higher end application.

Cabinets are something like this.

U-Line Under the counter refrigerator - This model offers an overlay trim kit option which will allow us to apply a door panel to match the cabinets.

What do you think? You see there's no mystery behind the magic of design. Those are the steps in a nutshell. I would love to walk you through the steps of your own potential magic. It's really a lot of fun when it all comes together, kind of like solving a puzzle AND you get to continue to enjoy it everyday!
Every once in a while you just have to get away, at least I do. So when the Treasure Coast Chapter of the National Kitchen and Bath Association announced that they were holding a meeting at the Cost d’Este in Vero Beach it was the perfect excuse for a staycation for me and the hub. This lush beach resort is a pet project of Gloria and Emilio Estefan. It was a perfect venue and a successful meeting for our fledgling chapter. Know what else it’d be good for? It would be great for folks at their wits end in the midst of a kitchen renovation! Note to self: Remember to recommend that clients throw a little "somethin- somethin" into that remodeling budget for a reno-getaway! When it gets down to the nitty gritty it’s best to leave it to the trusted experts that you hired and recharge your batteries and reset your stressometer to zero! Makes sense, no?
This love-child of the Estefans is a lush Miami-style beach resort located directly on the ocean in Vero Beach, about an hour and a half north of West Palm Beach. If the ever present pounding rhythm of the ocean doesn’t get you the décor will. There is not a square inch that hasn’t been designed to the hilt and I loved it all. It’s just too bad that Costa d’Este is the only thing in Vero. We tried but we couldn’t find any other signs of life. If you know otherwise please clue me in. Luckily this resort is so nice, from the essence of Nag Champa in the lobby to the unexpected visual treats around every corner. Sad to say my dinner experience at Oriente restaurant was less than inspiring. Don't get me wrong, my Cuban steak dinner was ok, just not what I would expect, especially considering that the Estefans are accomplished and experienced restaurateurs and cookbook authors. I grew up in Miami and I know for a fact I can get a Cuban steak, twice as tasty in the old neighborhood. Maybe I should've had the paella. Anyway the eye candy is delicious! Check out the following shots by yours truly and enjoy.
However, a group of my blogging homeys collaborate every two weeks on a Tuesday to sound off about a specific topic. It’s called “Let’s Blog Off”. The current discussion is "Guilty pleasures: what's your favorite show on television?"

Hmmm. First off, let me say that enjoyment and education are available on TV. I believe in watching TV with purpose as opposed to aimlessly channel surfing or leaving it on in the background. It's OK to turn it off and pick up a book (or a Nook) when your show is over! That said, my most embarrassing TV confession would be that I love watching Bethenny Ever After on Bravo. I know. I can't believe it either. Here's how it started. I was captive on a flight from New York to West Palm Beach and wonderful Jet Blue is so awesome with their free-flight-long- cable. I had finished my book, so you see it was a perfect storm that brought me to the wacky world of Bethenny. I really can't stand her, couldn't be more different but I grudgingly admire her success at self-marketing. That is a quality I really really admire. Think Madonna and now Lady Gaga. Bethenny Frankel has that certain something, be it annoying or not. The world is her oyster and she made it herself.

Check out what my fellow bloggers had to say!

Artful Kitchenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05292745519223808674noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-134635696635563711.post-54052707032809209792011-06-07T07:55:00.001-04:002011-08-09T12:56:27.726-04:00ALL THAT GLITTERS COULD BE GLASS!

You've heard me talk about glass before and it's place as a progressive material used in all sorts of innovative ways in the 21st century kitchen. The following is a press release I recently received for a company called Think Glass.

"One of the coolest products just unveiled at the National Kitchen Bath Show in Las Vegas was a stunning 4-inch glass countertop that looked like the luminescent ocean and actually glowed from within. The powerful LED lights embedded inside gave the glass countertop a radiance. ThinkGlass offers a variety of light colors and even the ability to create a “light show” via remote control with special effects such as flashing and fading lights to create an ambiance.

ThinkGlass has quickly become a leader in the thermoforming industry by pioneering a versatile technique that allows the creation of new or repetitive textures at a very low molding cost. This process allows the creation of glass slabs without thickness constraints opening the door to all kinds of design possibilities that far exceed anything that can be accomplished with stone, granite or marble."

This truly is a revolutionary break through. Previously the thickest counter top any sane glass expert would offer is 3/4". When glass reaches a thickness of 1.4" it becomes hard as stone and it is naturally antibacterial because of its totally nonporous nature.

Original artwork or decoration as well as texture can be added to make a glass counter top a unique expression.

ThinkGlass has been around for about 11 years and here's how they do it. The process begins with 8' by 11' sheets of 1/2" glass which is cut to size according to project specs. The glass is stacked and placed on a bed of sand in an oven. Any desired texture or design is drawn into the sand before the glass is placed on it. The glass is then baked for one day for every 1/2" of thickness. The finished product is then polished by hand. Pretty cool, huh? The sand is even reused so there is no waste.

The addition of LED lighting for illumination really takes glass to the next level and is sure to deliver lots of "wows". Glass is easy to clean and the addition of a texture is a crafty way to hide finger prints.

If you'd like just a little wow that's good too and can be enough. How about a raised glass top on your island? If you go this route make sure to employ a qualified professional who will know the best way to install and secure your top. Last but not least, don't forget that if you are a follower of Feng Shui, glass is a great way to add the water element to your kitchen. The element of water is said to attract wealth and health!

Our annual Kitchen & Bath Industry Show known as KBIS was held last month in Las Vegas. I’m hearing that attendance was much improved over the anemic showing of the last couple years. This show is traditionally where new products and design trends for the kitchen and bath are introduced to the world at large. Here are some of my new faves from the show!

The signature look of Borholm Kitchens was a timely refreshing addition to KBIS

Simple Scandanavian inspired detailing sets this line apart.

One of the most exciting debuts this year is Bornholm Cabinets, conceived of and created by fellow blogger Susan Serra and her daughter. They are a couple of smart cookies who know what’s both hot now as well as basic and unique enough to be timeless. The line is Scandanavian inspired but American made. Simple yet elegant and designed to blend into and enhance any environment. I think we’ll be seeing more of this. You can see more here.

I also love this beautiful bit of black.

Yes it’s a toilet! When it comes to commodes the Japanese have definitely got it going on and this example is no exception. We all know what a "smart" phone is, well meet the "smart" toilet! The REGIO by Inax features a sound system, heated seat, double power deodorizing, automatic seat and flushing, and dual nozzle bidet. Geez, what more could you want? Oh, yeah it’s also environmentally responsible. Check it out here

Here’s a new fun way to add a little glow to that backsplash area between your cabinets and counter top.

The °eluma RGB DecoSplash illuminated backsplash is the first fully customizeable color changing LED backsplash. You can change your color as you change your mood from fuschia to lime green! This LED light is dimmable and you even have your choice of decorative inserts. Find out more here.

Dark rich wood finishes continue to be a popular choice. I just love the Asian vibe (of course!) of this kitchen by Wellborn Cabinets.
Happy Cinco de Mayo. Today, the 5th of May, is the day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage. It marks the date of a Mexican victory in a regional battle with the French in 1862. However when I think of Mexico I think of Frida, bright splashes of color and real Mexican food, not the goop of melted cheese you find so often in "Mexican" restaurants. Frida, of course, is surrealist Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, one of the most well known artists of the twentieth century. She was married to the famous muralist Diego Rivera.
I love this movie because it is art. I doubt there is a single solitary frame in this film that cannot stand on its own as a work of art. The colors are amazing as are the scenes that morph from reality into artwork.
Today's Let's Blog Off topic queries the source of our ideas. Where does creativity reside? Is it within or is it outside and all around awaiting discovery? For me the answer is both. Yes, it's all around us, for sure, but it also requires the eye of the beholder to breathe life into it. Here is a recent example in my life of something I saw which inspired a blog post.

You may have the panache to pull off a monochrome white room that invites and stimulates the senses but for most of us going all the way with white runs the risk of BORING. Since white is so "white hot" at the moment, especially in the kitchen, I’m going to share with you the secret of how to make white pop.
One thing to remember is white is a team player, it’s all about the colors around it. As you know, I love art (a big source of inspiration). I recently came across this image in Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine which is a perfect example of how white can glow when surrounded by the right color. I see it work time and again. White cabinets plus color equals stunning. If your taste runs more to the conservative think camels, taupes or warm beige walls to create the contrast.

This example, by Holiday Kitchens, uses the same palette as the artwork!

If you’re more daring go for Apple Martini Green or Sky Blue. The nice thing is if you want to go for the gusto paint is a safe bet. It’s one thing you can change fairly easily and reasonably.
Another thing to remember about white is that it’s just not white. There are probably hundreds of whites and they all read differently depending on your lighting and location. The lesson here is to test your whites on site. Consider the color for a full 24 hours so you can see how it looks as lighting changes throughout the day.
Many times wherever you find white you will also find black. You can tastefully mix black and white cabinets or if you have guts and great lighting the walls could be black, as in this example. This photo also serves as a great inspiration for many of the newer homes we have in my area with cathedral ceilings but short stumpy cabinets (thank you Mr. Builder). If you can't afford to change the cabinets take advantage of the great space above for art. Here, it carries the eye upwards taking attention away from shorty cabinets.
It seems like the refrigerator is one kitchen appliance that is always changing and evolving. After all, it has risen from being a literal "ice box" to an electronic device that can be temperature controlled by area for your unique needs. The latest innovation is the four door model. Sounds like a car but it's a fridge. They look like the popular French door models but with an extra drawer. Consumer Reports recently reviewed three models, by Samsung, Kenmore and LG. The highest rated model was the Samsung which is also the priciest of the three retailing at $2,600. They liked the functionality of the extra drawer which has something called a FlexZone. It can be temperature adjusted for meat, drinks, kids' snacks etc. The Kenmore model rated highly too with its most appealing feature being an outside water/ice dispenser and a built-in filtration system. The Kenmore model retails for $2,400. The LG model did not fare as well as it has the least usable space and is the least energy efficient. It is however, the least expensive starting at $2,200.00. Incidentally Consumer Reports does reccommend several French (3 door) models at $1,000 or less.

Now that we've taken a look at the world of granite counter tops, today I'll tell you everything I can think of about quartz engineered stone countertops. First of all I am biased, but for good reason. As far as durability and efficient functionality you can't do better, seriously. Quartz is non-porous which means you don't have to worry about stains or sealers. In fact since it doesn't absorb it's antibacterial by its very nature. You can also cut and place hot pots directly on quartz without concern. Quartz is one of the hardest, most abundant minerals found in nature.

Silestone offers Four different shades of RED, including this one which is Koan, great to accent an island. This shows a "waterfall" style counter top

These qualities are firmly in the "pro column". If you want a countertop that is consistent and without streaks, movement and color variation it's the top for you. You will know what every inch will look like, no need to examine slabs. This this will be another pro for you. However if you want a counter top that is truly unique with an organic feel and drama, then the consistency is a con for you. Another con is price. Quartz is at least as expensive as granite (depending on the granite) and frequently even more. It typically comes in 3/4" or 1 1/4" thick slabs.

Here's what quartz looks like before being pulverized to make your top

There are many different brands on the market but they are all essentially the same thing which is approximately 93% natural quartz particles mixed with resins to hold it all together. So it is at least partly natural although it's a man-made product. These countertops belong to the category referred to as "solid surface". This means that the surface material runs all the way through unlike, for example, laminates. Corian is also a solid surface material but it can scratch and burn unlike quartz. Price varies little between brands but can vary according to color. If radon is a concern for you, quartz countertop manufacturers claim that testing shows their quartz counters to be low or free of radon gas. If you'll remember, in my previous post, I explained that radon is a naturally occurring substance found in the earth and since quartz is a natural substance you're not entirely out of the woods in that area. The most well known names in quartz countertops are Caesarstone, Silestone, and Zodiac. Cambria is an up and coming brand which I love for their color choices. Check our Local Resources guide on this website for suppliers in the Palm Beach County area.
Every two weeks, an intrepid group of bloggers participate in something called a Blog Off. We share our take on the same topic on the same day. Today's topic is If you could stop the world for one day, what would you take the time to do?

Well I'm not really sure what that means but I can tell you that since I found out about the topic all I can think of is a little ditty by the 80s group Modern English. It's called I Melt with You. Click here for convenient YouTube video. I know the chorus begins with "I'll stop the world and melt with you." SO I decided to head on over to Google for the rest of the lyrics. Maybe there would be some clue there about what to write.

"I Melt With You"

Moving forward using all my breath
Making love to you was never second best
I saw the world thrashing all around your face
Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace
I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you
Dream of better lives the kind which never hate
Dropped in the state of imaginary grace
I made a pilgrimage to save this human race
Never comprehending a race that long gone by
I'll stop the world and melt with you
You've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you
The future's open wide
I'll stop the world and melt with you
I've seen some changes but it's getting better all the time
There's nothing you and I won't do
I'll stop the world and melt with you

What I found was a whole lot of optimism, just what we need in our stressed and distressed world. I don't think we need to stop the world but maybe we just need to stop, not even for a whole day, but just once in a while for a few minutes. <del></del>I go go go and in the going sometimes <del>we</del>I lose the point. So today I'm gonna stop. I'm gonna be here now and I'm gonna hold a positive thought for this world of ours. If we all did that maybe it would make it better...Join me?

I must apologize for having been off the radar for too long! It certainly doesn't mean I've forgotten about you. In fact, I'm always thinking of things to write that will have value and interest to you. The good news is I have been very busy. People are suddenly ready to get serious about their projects. It's a regular springtime flurry of activity! One question that comes up often during the process of planning a new kitchen or bath is what type of counter top to use. There are tons of choices including the old standby, laminate, which incidentally is enjoying great popularity in Europe. This is not your grandma's Formica but a rejuvenated product with new and improved colors, textures and innovative applications. My friend, and fellow blogger, Paul Anater of Kitchen and Residential Design writes about it here. Then there are the new cutting edge "green" materials made out of recycled products such as Vetrazzo, a beautiful product with a mid-century feel made out of recycled glass. Definitely worth a look but for most of my clients it comes down to granite or quartz. Here's what I've learned in my experience working with both options. Today we'll take a look at granite.

As I write this, I hoped to once and for all dispell the myth about granite and radon. Well I can't. I can tell you that radon is a radioactive substance generally found in the soil and levels vary according to location. Granite, being a natural substance, can emit varying amounts. I personally am not worried nor have I heard of this to be a problem in my area. If you are concerned there are very inexpensive kits you can purchase that will test for the presence of radon in your home.

A great example of the natural variations inherent in granite.

One of the benefits of granite is all the beautiful colors and patterns it comes in courtesy of Mother Nature. This is a pro for some and a con for others. If you want your counter top to be visually consistent with an even pattern, granite could drive you crazy because many of them are just not like that. For this reason it is reccommended that you personally select the slabs to be used in your job.

Colors like blue and green are usually more pricey. This one is called Louise Blue

Granite, although less porous than marble, can still stain, show water spots and scratch, depending on the type of granite and the color. I must confess that I cut on my granite, subject it to hot pots and have had no problem. I reccommend that my clients get a sample, take it home and abuse it. If your selection stands up to the test you should be good to go. Your granite installer should also include a sealer which can be easily re applied about once a year or so.

Granite with fossils offer unique natural beauty.

Depending on where you live and what type of granite you like price could be an advantage over quartz. It is for us in Florida as we are close to the ports that receive the stone which saves a considerable amount in transportation. Also, in general, the more plentiful the stone the lower the price with rare selections being more expensive.

Today's Blog Off topic is "What are you carrying?" Good question. As I pondered it, while driving to my appointment today, I heard an interview with Dr. Marc Agronin, author of [amazon_link id="0306818531" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]How We Age: A Doctor's Journey into the Heart of Growing Old[/amazon_link]. He was discussing the qualities and essential parts of ourselves that we carry into old age. This got me thinking about how I would approach this Blog Off topic. What are the gifts I carry with me now that I did not see at 18? One thing is a sense of perspective. They're not kidding when they say "hind sight is 20/20". Today I think before I act. I look beyond the present moment. I have also managed to carry with me a general sense of optimism. Yes I have suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, haven't we all? But for me, behind it all, hope is always there. Today I carry with me the hope that my children will be everything they wish for themselves. I believe everything happens for a reason and that there are no coincidences. I honor my intuition and I also have some weird inkling that if I keep plugging away at this blog something will happen. I don't know what but I hope and it keeps me going. The MOST important thing I carry with me is my attitude.
A true Asian grocery store has opened about 6.8 miles from my home. In case you've been asleep for the past few years you'll know that we in the west are currently in the midst of a wild love affair with Asian style and the love definitely extends to cuisine. Why? Who knows. One can only hope it's merely because we are becoming a more open society willing to explore and embrace other cultures (LOL). Anyway, I digress. Joe and I love to experiment with ethnic flavors (only in a healthy way, of course). We are always on the lookout for a new recipe that offers heavenly flavor without 10,000 Weight Watchers points. If you're going Asian, chances are all you'll really need is a wok (or just a really big skillet). Add to that all manner of inexpensive ingredients from your local Asian grocers and you're on your way. Yes, I said INEXPENSIVE. Want to save money? Go ethnic. In addition to scoring all kinds of unique products you'll find a lot of the usual stuff for much less.
If you live in my neck of the woods you can visit 1st Asian Market at 7372 Lake Worth Road, Lake Worth, Florida 33467. Manager Anthony To also wants you to know that Asian 1st Market is you spot for Boba, or bubble tea. Apparently it's a refreshing delicacy found in many Asian countries and cities with large Asian populations throughout the world, their Starbuck's, if you will. Here's what our friends at Wiki have to say:

"Bubble tea or foam tea, is a sweetly flavored tea beverage invented inTaiwan. Drink recipes may vary, but most bubble teas contain a tea base mixed with fruit (or fruit syrup) and/or milk. Ice blended versions of the drink are also available, usually in fruit flavors. Bubble teas usually contain small tapioca balls or pearls called "boba". If you're intrigued and would like to know more, click here.

1st Asian can also take care of your sushi catering needs. How about a sushi birthday cake?

You can get a cake built out of sushi.

Anthony made me this boba tea with honey dew!

Just watch out for those <del></del>pearls. Boba tea comes with a fat straw designed to suck them up and if you're not one to focus while sucking you may want to have someone certified in the Heimlich Maneuver on hand, just in case. I found it light, refreshing and not too sweet. Mine was actually flavored with honey dew melon, unexpected but really good. Now for that recipe I promised. Jones-ing for some tasty Thai? Simple. Try this.

GLO'S EASY PANANG CURRY

Ingredients

Take one can of Panang curry paste, one can of coconut milk (Mae Ploy is the best but very fattening), an assortment of your fave veggies and about a pound of any type of meat or fish if desired.

Directions:

In your wok or skillet gently stir fry desired veggies (you know which ones take longer to cook) and meat if desired. I like to add a little seasoning to taste but remember the Panang curry is going to provide lots of flavor. While that's going on heat about a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a sauce pan and stir in one can of Panang curry paste, turn heat down to medium-low and slowly add about a third of a can of coconut milk. Make sure you mix the coconut milk up well before adding. The whole object is to retain a nice smooth consistency. Once you've go that done add it to the skillet mixture and slowly add the rest of the coconut milk. Let it all simmer for a few minutes and you're ready to enjoy over jasmine rice or perhaps rice noodles. Garnish with lime and fresh basil and enjoy! If you have any other recipes or suggestions BRING IT BABY :)

Brendan has done it again! One of our favorite clients has been exploring exotic wood veneers as a way to add unique beauty to their new dream kitchen. (See previous post about wood veneers here). They chose Olive Ash Burl veneer and here are the doors we've come up with. The first is a dark stained cherry frame around a natural Olive Ash Burl veneer center panel.

Up close look at the burl center panel

The swirls of the burl are stunning. They stimulate the imagination. With every glance a new shape emerges. Maybe this would be a good tool for psychlogists! Keep in mind that a little goes a long way here. I probably wouldn't use these for every single door in your kitchen. Use them as a focal point. Not only will it have just the right amount of impact but you'll save money by mixing it up with a basic.

Door #2. Any ideas?

The second door is slab-styled with a dark stained Olive Ash Burl veneer face. The edge banding is a smooth dark stained cherry to match. They are going to become part of our standard offering here at Brendan Donovan Furniture & Cabinet Co. and shall be named! Any good ideas? I'm open to suggestions. Oh and by the way, this veneer comes from various parts of Europe, in case that influences your decision.
Hafele is one of my favorite resources for kitchen hardware and functional, fun accessories. Known for quality and efficient German engineering it seems they are always coming out with something "wow-worthy". Our ever faithful local rep, Pat Flatley, keeps me in the loop on their latest products. I just found out about this one which I'm dying to share with you. It's call Loox. Does it sound like a Dr. Seus character? Sure. Is it a seriously kick-ass lighting option for your home? Definitely. Whether it's task lighting or just an ambient after glow you're looking for, Loox has the answer. Loox is a low-voltage LED lighting system. You can read about the technical details here.
What I love is the great functionality of having a light inside a drawer or in the nooks and crannies of the closet. Check out this handy Loox Room Configurator. I can’t believe I’ve been back a week already! I guess it’s time to refocus on Florida. What better way than to share this kitchen from my portfolio? Yes, it is the quintessential “Florida” kitchen but you don’t have to live in Florida to have one. If you have a yearning for the tropics year-round, this could be the perfect <del></del>(poor choice of words) solution for you. This combination of white, stainless and shades of blue green that call to mind the ocean make this a Florida dream kitchen that you can apply to your own home.

I always say the best projects are the result of great collaboration and this beautiful kitchen was certainly the result of that. The house is located in a new development and came with a builder-grade offering of unremarkable cabinetry. The new design includes a few tweaks. One priority for this young mom was to have a very open feel to her kitchen. We even wanted to remove the wall between the kitchen and butler’s pantry. That was not to be as it turned out to be structural. Plan two was to open it up so that you could at least see through it. I think you’ll agree it worked really well.

The cabinetry is by Holiday Kitchens, Inc. The door style is called Seattle and it is wood with white paint. Counter tops are white quartz and the dramatic backsplash is penny tile. A penny tile is a round penny-sized mosaic tile that comes in sheets for easy installation. Appliances include a full sized 36” refrigerator and freezer by SubZero, a built-in wall oven and a handy microwave drawer by Sharp. Granted I'm biased, but I have to say that Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen is the most engaging exhibit I have had the pleasure of attending. It opened at the Museum of Modern Art September 15th and closes on March 11th. The thing about this show is that we can all identify and connect with the topic of kitchens. They are an integral part of how we live but we seldom give thought to exactly how they came about. You can find just about all there is to know right here.
The only critique I have is that I wish they would have included commentary post midcentury. The concepts of the kitchen are so dynamic and there is a lot to be said with regard to the last half of the 20th century. Nevertheless, especially for a kitchen professional or enthusiast this is an absorbing and engaging experience. The exhibit is divided into three main segments.
"Toward the Modern Kitchen" examines the early research in efficiency and time management that culminated in the design of the Frankfurt kitchen in 1928 by Margrete Schutte Lihosky. A post World War I housing crisis provided the impetus for such reasearch resulting in what is thought to be the first "modern" kitchen. You can read more about this history on a previous post here. It was believed that by transforming daily life at the level of he kitchen behavioral change and social well being would result. Good old German efficiency and practicality were at the heart of these inventions and it was two women in particular who made the biggest contributions, researcher Christine Frederick, as well as architect Margrete Schutte Lihosky.
The second part of the show is "Visions of Plenty" and deals with the post-war kitchens in America. It was then that the ergonomic considerations begun by Ms. Lihosky were further refined and a standard counter height of 36" was established. This was based on the average height of a woman at the time. Kitchens also began to evolve into living areas at this time and were very influenced by food restrictions brought about by the second world war.

In addition myriad everyday objects are on display throughout the show. We never think about where the things we use everyday come from but they have a history and were shaped by our culture and time.
Yesterday we were supposed to go to the Armory Art Show but due to a late start we ended up at the Whitney instead. The late start was worth it, however as my brother-in-law made us salmon eggs benedict which I highly recommend! We found the recipe here at my fave recipe source allrecipes.com. Right now the Whitney is featuring a special exhibition on Edward Hopper. The Whitney Museum
is only a fraction of the size of the Met, admission is $18 and the staff is grumpy and surly at best. I digress, back to Edward. Here's what Wiki has to say about him: Edward Hopper was a prominent American realist painter and printmaker. While most popularly known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker in etching. In both his urban and rural scenes, his spare and finely calculated renderings reflected his personal vision of modern American life. I guess when I think of him I think of the rural American scene and was not so familiar with his urban themes. I enjoyed seeing these and the works of other artists who, as his contemporaries and peers, were influenced and inspired by him. I'd show you some pix but they were verboten so here's an example of one I Googled. After that we wandered over to the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle which is basically a huge mall. The thing about NYC is that you will find something intriguing at every turn, whether it is a character on the street or something like this totally unexpected Salvador Dali sculpture at Time Warner!
This woman, almost entirely composed of flames, combines two of Dali's favourite obsessions: fire, and a female figure interspersed with drawers. Dali found flames fascinating because they seem to have a life of their own, exerting an almost hypnotic influence on the observer.
